“This is Front Desk, how can I help you?”
My fingers fly across the keyboard as the agent on the other end of the secure line rattles off a steady stream of information.
“It looks like he’s got a villa on…Martinique,” I say as a map pops up on the screen. “He bought it under the name Valentine Holdings, but it’s him, all right. And his pilot filed a flight plan two hours ago, so he’ll arrive on Martinique in about seven hours.”
The agent swears loudly in my ear and I grimace. “Keep it down, would you? I can hear you fine.”
I book a ticket to Martinique for the field agent and set him up with forged employment credentials and a map to get him inside the villa, and then log off. With a sigh, I relax back into my chair and toss my headset on the desk in front of me.
It’s late, and the Agency’s expansive compound is quiet, but not dead. Outside, the trainers put new recruits through a grueling nighttime training exercise. A few agents and administrators wander past, on call and ready for whatever might happen during the night. But my boss, Hunter, is at home with his wife, and I guess technically, I should be at home, too.
What else is there to do, really? I live alone, with no family or any real friends outside of the Agency. Almost everybody here knows me as Front Desk—F.D. for short—and call me for anything and everything. Hacking into a heavily secured database? Done. Tracing complex financial transactions to a single person? I can do that. Programming keycards to get into a fucking fortress? Absolutely. I’m the Front Desk, and I’m the best at what I do.
The only one who can do it. And when I’m plugged into my desk at the Agency, I’m needed. Appreciated.
A call comes through—it’s Hunter’s secure line. I roll my eyes and jam my headset back over my ears.
“Boss,” I say, then brace myself for the lecture.
He doesn’t disappoint.
“Are you seriously still there?” Hunter demands furiously. “I thought I told you to go home and do something for yourself. Read a book. Take a bath. Something.”
I roll my eyes. “Well, I’m here. Did you need something, or are you just calling to be a dick?”
