“We’re here, boss,” George says from the driver’s seat.
I catch his eyes in the rearview mirror and nod. My face is grim and so is his. This is an unpleasant errand, one I would rather not have to deal with, but necessary nonetheless.
George—the Hungarian Gyorgy is his real name, but he insists on the Anglicized George—steps out of the front seat and crosses around to the door next to me, swinging it open for me to exit the town car. I step out onto the sidewalk, still wet from an early morning rain shower, and take a deep breath of the fresh air as I straighten my suit jacket.
“Let’s go get this over with,” I say. I check my watch and sigh with annoyance. “Maybe we can get back to the office before Istvan eats all the bagels.”
Robert Call-Me-Bob Wellstone’s office is a low brick building, the kind that tries to blend in with a certain local aesthetic. Carefully tended flower beds surround the windows and there’s even a rustic wooden bench out front. It all looks nice, nice enough that nobody who walks by this building would guess that Bob’s been misbehaving.
Really misbehaving. He’s the money man for my operation—casinos, mainly, but I have my fingers in a lot of pies. Bob helps me transform my questionable gains into something a little more…respectable, and in turn, I pay him handsomely for his accounting services. But I still keep a close eye on everything, and sometime during the last month or so, Call-Me-Bob decided to dip his greedy fingers where they didn’t belong.
I’m a generous man. Understanding, too. But I can’t let anyone take advantage of me like this, and so today I’m here to encourage Bob to rectify his mistakes.
The front door chimes as George pushes it open ahead of me, and I slip my sunglasses off my nose and tuck them into my breast pocket as I step into the cool interior.
“Good morning, sir, can I help you?” I hear a bright voice say as I breeze by the front desk. I turn for a brief second to flash a smile before I keep going back to Bob’s office.
Or at least I would have kept going and just barged in unannounced, but the girl behind the front desk stops me in my tracks.
