As soon as I step onto the small back porch of the cabin, my phone rings. The reception in the mountains is spotty at best, so the sound startles me. Although I was doing my best to ignore everyone back home, I check the screen out of habit. Seeing my brother’s name, I let out a sigh of relief and answer the call.
“Hey, Connor, what’s up?” I ask, dropping into a weathered wooden chair.
“Just checking in. You disappeared off the face of the Earth the other day. You OK?” Connor asks.
“Yeah, man, I just needed a break. Between the twenty mind-numbing meetings this week and mother trying to force me together with Caroline, I’ve had enough. It’s all just...” I trail off, rubbing my face with my hand. I can’t figure out how to explain what I’m feeling, but if anyone understands, it’s my little brother.
“I get it. I do. But mom and dad are pissed. We are still finishing negotiations on the buyout, and dad was expecting you to sweet talk Harding into a better deal.” Connor pauses for a second before continuing. “But I definitely don’t blame you for bailing on Caroline. I saw her at the gala last week, and she was eying you like a piece of steak. I could practically see dollar signs in her eyes. Run. Run from that one.”
“Oh, I’m aware. And I did run, remember? I’ll be back soon; I promise not to leave you to the wolves. I just need a week or two to restore my sanity. And hopefully send a message that I’m done being their pawn.”
“Fair enough. I can hold them off for that long, I think. So, where are you anyway? Or is it a state secret?” Connor asks, humor in his voice.
“Let’s just say I’m about five hundred miles from civilization. And as far from New York as I could get. Metaphorically, I mean. I passed a man driving his tractor down the road and was trapped behind a herd of cows on the way up.” I laugh. “None of mother’s little socialites would be caught dead out here, that’s for sure.”
Connor laughs, and after promising to talk again soon, we hang up.
I drop my muddy boots by the door and wander into the kitchen. I’ve been in the cabin for two days now, and my meager food supplies have just about run out. On the way through what passed for a town the other day I saw a tiny diner and made note of it. Now, starving, I decide to stop and get some hot food before picking up more groceries.
