At least, that’s what I’m trying for. The wet track down my cheek tells me it isn’t working.
Impatiently, I wipe the moisture out of my eyes. It’s cold, dark, and rainy outside. I can barely see out my windshield even with the wipers going full speed.
Maybe I should have waited to make this drive. Though, it’s not like I had many options once my mom kicked me out of the house earlier today. Just one more semester of college. That’s all I had to get through. Then I could move out, get a job, and start my new life.
Instead, we had a huge fight this afternoon. It started with her saying I needed to lose weight. It’s not the first time she’s said it—or the first time we’ve fought—but I guess I’d had enough because this time I told her I disagreed. Things escalated, and an hour later she was screaming, “If you’re that ungrateful, you can get the hell out of my house!” Then she watched me while I packed up my things.
So here I am. On the road. Technically homeless.
Thank goodness Hannah is having a long bachelorette party this weekend. At least I have a place to stay through Sunday.
But not if I can’t find the place. My cell phone lost its GPS signal thirty minutes ago… or was it an hour? It feels like a while that I’ve been creeping along this two lane highway and navigating by the last set of directions my phone offered.
The upside of the drive is I’m concentrating so hard on figuring out where I am that I’m not crying anymore.
When I pass another country road with no street sign, I decide to pull over and orient myself. At the next turnoff, I pull off the main road and put the car in park under some trees. The rain on the windshield is slightly less, but it’s still windy and dark.
Peering at my phone, I try to figure out where I am. Hannah got a vacation rental out in the boonies. It’s supposed to be this gorgeous, luxury cabin next to the river with a hot tub on each deck and an entire refrigerator stocked with wine and alcohol for a long weekend.
Of course, she’s expecting me on Friday. It’s only Wednesday. I know she’s up there early, getting things ready. When my mother kicked me out, showing up a couple days early to help seemed like a good idea. But now, I’m pretty sure I’m lost. And wandering around the country roads looking for the rental seems like a bad idea.
