I study Ranger across the clubhouse bar, trying to decide if he’s serious.
“I can’t,” I finally tell him. “I’m busy.”
He makes a show of looking around the empty common area. This time of day, everyone else is already off doing their own thing. Everyone but me. It’s not to say being Road Captain for the Raging Angels isn’t rewarding, but with the Four Knights’ warehouse being rebuilt and the recent trouble from a rival MC, we aren’t doing as many runs right now, so I have some free time on my hands.
Ranger doesn’t hesitate to call me out on it. “Doing what? Day drinking and getting your ass kicked by Trixie at pool?”
“Hey, don’t judge.” I pour two fingers of vodka into the glass in front of me and reach for a Coke, but by the time I turn back, he’s already taken it and downed the liquor.
He slams the empty glass back on the bar. “You have a meeting with Senator Torres in thirty minutes. You can’t go there smelling like a desperate housewife.”
“If only,” I muse.
He ignores me. “We’ve all done things we don’t like for the club, and getting hired on as a bodyguard is not a bad gig.”
“You say bodyguard, I say babysitter.” I pop the top on the Coke and take a swig. “I’m not a prospect, for Christ’s sake.”
“You’re right, but we’re not on the road right now. And I trust you to do this right.”
I lean my elbows on the bar and run my hands through my hair. “Why us?” I ask. “It’s not like we typically provide security services.”
“Senator Torres doesn’t want typical security services,” Ranger says, checking his watch and pushing to his feet. I check the clock over his head and see that it’s almost time for Max, his girlfriend’s son, to be getting off of the bus. He likes to meet him at the entrance to the compound so he doesn’t have to walk alone. That’s just the kind of guy our club president is—a loving family man with a heart of gold and an iron fist ready to hammer me into my place.
I love him, but damn it, I really don’t want to babysit some spoiled teenager.
“What does he want, then?” I ask before he can make his escape.
“He wants someone who can keep his daughter safe. Someone who will go to extreme lengths, if needed.”
Someone willing to bend the law, he means.
“And it’s good for the Angels to have a connection to the local government, just in case,” he adds.
And even though I hate to admit it, and I hate the part I have to play in it, he’s right.
