I look down at the resume on my desk and read the name across the top: Harper Matthews. The girl’s got some nerve, I’ll give her that. Not even bothering to change her name.

The door to my office bangs open then, and Julian slips inside, collapsing into one of the guest chairs in front of me.
“What the hell?” I grumble.
“I can’t take it anymore,” he says.
I lean back in my chair, linking my hands behind my head. “Are they at it again?”
Julian, usually in good spirits, grimaces. “I love a good fuck as much as the next man, but I don’t know how he’s getting any work done.”
I shrug, nonchalant only because my office isn’t right next door to Massimo’s, and I don’t have to listen to the love-birds scream each other’s names every day. “They’re in love. At least one of us is.”
“What, not planning on settling down?” he teases, knowing damn well I’ve never seen a happily-ever-after in my cards. This job, this company, my friends...this is all I need. To fall in love with someone, to trust them with my heart?
Not a fucking chance.
“What about you?” I ask Julian. He’s a serial dater, an incurable flirt, and the very definition of a man-whore. That’s why I have one of my agents assigned exclusively to him and keeping tabs on the numerous women who come and go from his life. “Going to ask your flavor of the week to tie the knot?”
He scoffs. “I don’t think Candy is the marrying type.”
I roll my eyes. “Of course her name is Candy.”
Ignoring me, he asks, “Are you fighting tonight?”
Nodding to the resume on my desk, I say, “It depends on how this goes. If I need to beat the shit out of someone or not.”
“Another interview?” I slide the paper toward him, and he reads the name. “Harper Matthews.” His dark brows raise and he looks up at me, seemingly impressed. “She has some security experience.”
That, at least, is true. She graduated from Central High School about seven years ago and went straight to work as a security manager for a juvenile rehabilitation center in a nearby town and later, a private security company that had her traveling around the country. Now, she’s back in Heathcliff and trying to get her foot in our door. Except...
“It’s what her resume doesn’t say that has me the most intrigued,” I tell Julian, sliding the next stack of papers across the table, the report from my own investigations.
